On August 4, the Orthodox Church commemorates the Seven Holy Youths of Ephesus.

The Readings for Today:

  • 1 Corinthians 11:31-12:6: St. Paul speaks about the importance of discernment in the Church and the unity of the Body of Christ. He encourages believers to seek spiritual gifts and use them in service to one another, reminding us of our shared purpose in God's plan.

  • Matthew 18:1-11: In this passage, Christ teaches His disciples about humility, urging them to become like little children in their faith and to care for the "little ones" who believe in Him. This passage emphasizes the importance of humility, repentance, and the love of God.

The Seven Holy Youths of Ephesus: A Story of Faith and Courage

The Seven Holy Youths of Ephesus are celebrated for their commitment to Christ in the face of severe persecution. According to tradition, they were sealed in a cave by Emperor Decius during his persecution of Christians in the 3rd century. They miraculously slept for over 200 years, only to awaken to find Christianity flourishing throughout the Roman Empire. Their story exemplifies the power of God's providence and the hope of eternal life.

Glory to Jesus Christ!

On July 28, the Orthodox Church commemorates the Holy Disciples from the Seventy: Prochorus, Nikanor, Timon, and Parmenas—faithful followers of Christ who were chosen to be among the Seventy Apostles. These men served alongside the Apostles and played key roles in spreading the Gospel and serving the early Church.

The Holy Disciples: Faithful Servants of Christ

The Seventy Disciples were early companions of Christ who helped with His ministry, particularly during His travels and teachings. Their role in the early Church was pivotal, as they were among the first to witness Christ’s miracles, hear His teachings, and later, spread the message of salvation throughout the world.

  • Prochorus: He later became one of the first bishops of Nicomedia and is known for his close association with the Apostle John.

  • Nikanor: Known for his deep faith, he was one of the first deacons in the early Church.

  • Timon: Known for his wise leadership and service, Timon played a crucial role in spreading Christianity.

  • Parmenas: A devoted servant, Parmenas is remembered for his unwavering dedication to Christ and the early Christian community.

Today's Prescribed Readings

As we commemorate these great disciples, we reflect on the following readings:

  • 1 Corinthians 9:13-18
St. Paul teaches us about the necessity of sharing the Gospel freely, and how those who spread the message of Christ must not be motivated by material gain but by the love of God and the salvation of souls.

  • Matthew 16:1-6
Jesus warns the Pharisees and Sadducees about their unbelief, encouraging His followers to see beyond the signs of the times and trust in the true revelation of God. This passage reminds us to be vigilant in our faith and not be swayed by worldly distractions.

"The love of God inspires the love of our neighbor, and the love of our neighbor serves to keep alive the love of God." --St. Gregory the Great, Pope of Rome

"The person who fears the Lord has humility as his constant companion and, through the thoughts which humility inspires, reaches a state of divine love and thankfulness. For he recalls his former worldly way of life, the various sins he has committed and the temptations which have befallen him since his youth; and he recalls, too, how the Lord delivered him from all this, and how He led him away from a passion-dominated life to a life ruled by God. Then, together with fear, he also receives love, and in deep humility continually gives thanks to the Benefactor and Helmsman of our lives." --St. Maximos the Confessor

"You are indignant that God is indignant, as if you deserved anything good by living evilly, as if all those things that happen were still not less and lighter than your own sins." --St. Cyprian of Carthage

"When you pray, try to let the prayer reach your heart; in other words, it is necessary that your heart should feel what you are talking about in your prayer, that it should wish for the blessing for which you are asking…. Observe, during prayer, whether your heart is in accord with that which you are saying." --St. John of Kronstadt

"The principal vices - stupidity, cowardice, licentiousness, injustice - are the "image" of the "earthy" man. The principal virtues - intelligence, courage, self-restraint, justice - are the "image" of the "heavenly" man. As we have borne the image of the earthy, let us also bear the image of the heavenly (1 Corinthians 15:49)." --St. Maximos the Confessor

"As we lift up our hearts to [our Lord] we shall behold the great spectacle of our nature united forever with the fire of the divinity. And laying aside everything to do with the coats of skin in which we were clothed because of the transgression (Genesis 3:21), let us stand on holy ground (Exodus 3:5), each one of us marking out his own holy ground through virtue and steadfast inclination towards God. In this way we shall be bold when God comes in fire, and run forward to be enlightened and once enlightened live with Him forever, to the glory of Him Who is the Light above all glory, might, honor and worship, now and ever and unto the ages of ages. Amen." --St. Gregory Palamas

"Do not shun poverty and afflictions, these wings of buoyant prayer." --St. Nilus of Sinai

"Through the prayer, man is cleansed, brightened, sanctified." --Elder Amphilochios of Patmos

"Do all in your power not to fall, for the strong athlete should not fall. But if you do fall, get up again at once and continue the contest. Even if you fall a thousand times because of the withdrawal of God's grace, rise up again each time, and keep on doing this until the day of your death. For it is written, 'If a righteous man falls down seven times'—that is, repeatedly throughout his life—'seven times shall he rise again' [Proverbs 24:16]." --St. John of Karpathos
