Glory to Jesus Christ!

On Thursday, July 24, the Orthodox Church commemorates the Holy Martyrs and Passion-Bearers Boris and Gleb, two brothers whose unwavering faith and martyrdom continue to inspire Christians today. Their story is one of loyalty to Christ, as they gave their lives rather than betray their sacred calling.

The Significance of Boris and Gleb

Boris and Gleb were the sons of St. Vladimir, the ruler who Christianized Kievan Rus. Despite being heirs to the throne, the brothers chose the path of humility and love for Christ, even in the face of betrayal and death. Their martyrdom is a powerful reminder of the selfless sacrifice that Christ calls us to make.

Today's Prescribed Readings

The Church invites us to reflect on the following readings as we commemorate these holy martyrs:

  • 1 Corinthians 7:24-35
St. Paul’s teachings on living faithfully in the world and remaining devoted to Christ, while fulfilling our earthly duties, provide us with guidance as we seek to balance the spiritual and material aspects of life.

  • Matthew 15:12-21
In this passage, Jesus addresses the purity of the heart, reminding us that true defilement comes not from external actions but from what lies within. As we meditate on these readings, we are called to purify our hearts and live lives of true devotion.
