Glory to Jesus Christ!
On July 22, the Orthodox Church commemorates the Holy Myrrh-Bearer and Equal-to-the-Apostles Mary Magdalene. St. Mary Magdalene holds a special place in the Orthodox Church as one of the most devoted followers of Christ. She was the first to witness the Resurrection of our Lord and was chosen by Christ to share the Good News with others.
Who Was St. Mary Magdalene?
St. Mary Magdalene is one of the most revered women in the Orthodox Church. She is often called the "Apostle to the Apostles" because, after witnessing Christ’s Resurrection, she was sent by Him to proclaim the message of His triumph over death to His disciples. Her unwavering faith and dedication to Christ make her a powerful example of Christian discipleship. She is also remembered as one of the Myrrh-Bearers, women who faithfully ministered to Christ, even in His suffering.
Readings for July 22
As we reflect on the life and faith of St. Mary Magdalene, the readings for today guide us to focus on dedication to Christ and the importance of spreading the Gospel:
📖 1 Corinthians 9:2-12: In this passage, St. Paul discusses his rights as an Apostle and the importance of preaching the Gospel with humility and dedication. He emphasizes that all believers are called to serve Christ, not for personal gain, but for the sake of the Kingdom of God.
📖 Luke 8:1-3: This passage highlights St, Mary Magdalene’s role in supporting Christ's ministry, along with other women who followed Jesus and provided for His needs. It is a reminder of the important role that faithful followers, like St. Mary Magdalene, played in spreading the Gospel and supporting the work of the Church.
