Glory to Jesus Christ!

On Thursday, July 24, the Orthodox Church commemorates the Holy Martyrs and Passion-Bearers Boris and Gleb, two brothers whose unwavering faith and martyrdom continue to inspire Christians today. Their story is one of loyalty to Christ, as they gave their lives rather than betray their sacred calling.

The Significance of Boris and Gleb

Boris and Gleb were the sons of St. Vladimir, the ruler who Christianized Kievan Rus. Despite being heirs to the throne, the brothers chose the path of humility and love for Christ, even in the face of betrayal and death. Their martyrdom is a powerful reminder of the selfless sacrifice that Christ calls us to make.

Today's Prescribed Readings

The Church invites us to reflect on the following readings as we commemorate these holy martyrs:

  • 1 Corinthians 7:24-35
St. Paul’s teachings on living faithfully in the world and remaining devoted to Christ, while fulfilling our earthly duties, provide us with guidance as we seek to balance the spiritual and material aspects of life.

  • Matthew 15:12-21
In this passage, Jesus addresses the purity of the heart, reminding us that true defilement comes not from external actions but from what lies within. As we meditate on these readings, we are called to purify our hearts and live lives of true devotion.

St. Mary Magdalene holds a special place in the Orthodox Church as one of the most devoted followers of Christ. She was the first to witness the Resurrection of our Lord and was chosen by Christ to share the Good News with others.

Who Was St. Mary Magdalene?

St. Mary Magdalene is one of the most revered women in the Orthodox Church. She is often called the "Apostle to the Apostles" because, after witnessing Christ’s Resurrection, she was sent by Him to proclaim the message of His triumph over death to His disciples. Her unwavering faith and dedication to Christ make her a powerful example of Christian discipleship. She is also remembered as one of the Myrrh-Bearers, women who faithfully ministered to Christ, even in His suffering.

Readings for July 22

As we reflect on the life and faith of St. Mary Magdalene, the readings for today guide us to focus on dedication to Christ and the importance of spreading the Gospel:

📖 1 Corinthians 9:2-12: In this passage, St. Paul discusses his rights as an Apostle and the importance of preaching the Gospel with humility and dedication. He emphasizes that all believers are called to serve Christ, not for personal gain, but for the sake of the Kingdom of God.

📖 Luke 8:1-3: This passage highlights St, Mary Magdalene’s role in supporting Christ's ministry, along with other women who followed Jesus and provided for His needs. It is a reminder of the important role that faithful followers, like St. Mary Magdalene, played in spreading the Gospel and supporting the work of the Church.

Who Was the Prophet Ezekiel?

Ezekiel was one of the great prophets of the Old Testament, called by God to deliver His message during a time of exile for the Israelites. Known for his dramatic visions, Ezekiel prophesied about the restoration of Israel and the coming of the Lord's Kingdom. He is remembered for his obedience to God and his unwavering dedication to delivering God's message, even when it was met with resistance.

"As we lift up our hearts to [our Lord] we shall behold the great spectacle of our nature united forever with the fire of the divinity. And laying aside everything to do with the coats of skin in which we were clothed because of the transgression (Genesis 3:21), let us stand on holy ground (Exodus 3:5), each one of us marking out his own holy ground through virtue and steadfast inclination towards God. In this way we shall be bold when God comes in fire, and run forward to be enlightened and once enlightened live with Him forever, to the glory of Him Who is the Light above all glory, might, honor and worship, now and ever and unto the ages of ages. Amen." --St. Gregory Palamas

"Do not shun poverty and afflictions, these wings of buoyant prayer." --St. Nilus of Sinai

"Through the prayer, man is cleansed, brightened, sanctified." --Elder Amphilochios of Patmos

"Do all in your power not to fall, for the strong athlete should not fall. But if you do fall, get up again at once and continue the contest. Even if you fall a thousand times because of the withdrawal of God's grace, rise up again each time, and keep on doing this until the day of your death. For it is written, 'If a righteous man falls down seven times'—that is, repeatedly throughout his life—'seven times shall he rise again' [Proverbs 24:16]." --St. John of Karpathos

"True, one may know man’s final goal: communion with God. And one may describe the path to it: faith, and walking in the commandments, with the aid of divine grace. One need only say in addition: here is the path-start walking!" --St. Theophan The Recluse

"Watch your heart during all your life—examine it, listen to it, and see what prevents its union with the most blessed Lord. Let this be for you the science of all sciences, and with God’s help you will easily observe what estranges you from God, and what draws you towards Him and unites you to Him. It is the evil spirit more than anything else that stands between our hearts and God; he estranges God from us by various passions, or by the desires of the flesh, by the desires of the eyes, and by worldly pride." --St. John of Kronstadt

"If you pray truly, you will receive assurances of many things, and angels will come to you as they came to Daniel, and will enlighten you with understanding of causes, the wherefore of all things." --St. Nilus of Sinai

Words from the Saints -- July 3, 2025

Gerald Largent

"Be ashamed when you sin, not when you repent." --St. John Chrysostom

"It is God, Who is merciful and grants everyone what he needs, Who is building him up when He gives him more than he needs; in doing so He shows the abundance of His love for men and teaches him to give thanks. When He does not grant him what he needs, He makes him compensate for the thing he needs through the working of the mind and teaches him patience." --St. Dorotheos of Gaza

"Through repentance the filth of our foul actions is washed away. After this, we participate in the Holy Spirit, not automatically, but according to the faith, humility and inner disposition of the repentance in which our soul is engaged. For this reason it is good to repent each day as the act of repentance is unending." --St. Simeon the New Theologian

"There is no possession more precious than prayer in the whole of human life. Never be parted from it; never abandon it. But, as our Lord said, let us pray that our toil may not be for nothing, ‘When you stand in prayer, forgive if you have anything against anyone, that your heavenly Father may forgive you your faults.'" --St. Ephraim the Syrian

"Every day you provide your bodies with good to keep them from failing. In the same way your good works should be the daily nourishment of your hearts. Your bodies are fed with food and your spirits with good works. You aren’t to deny your soul, which is going to live forever, what you grant to your body, which is going to die." --St. Gregory the Great
