The Church prepares for the Transfiguration while honoring faithful witnesses, including Saint Nonna, the prayerful mother of Saint Gregory the Theologian.

Today’s Scripture readings are 1 Corinthians 16:4–12 and Matthew 21:28–32. The apostolic reading models faithful stewardship, while the Gospel contrasts obedient repentance with empty promises. As the Transfiguration approaches, the Church calls us to let Christ’s light transform our choices.

Today’s Scripture readings are 1 Corinthians 15:12–19 and Matthew 21:18–22. Saint Paul anchors Christian hope in the Resurrection, while Christ’s words concerning the fig tree call us to fruitful faith and prayer. The venerable ascetics commemorated today pursued that fruit through perseverance.

On July 31, the Orthodox Church commemorates the Righteous Joseph of Arimathea. He was a respected member of the Jewish council and a secret disciple of Jesus Christ. After the Crucifixion, he boldly approached Pontius Pilate and asked for the Body of the Savior. Together with Nicodemus, he prepared Christ’s Body for burial and placed it in the tomb that Joseph had prepared for himself..

The readings join steadfast endurance, the diversity of spiritual gifts, and the humility of a childlike heart. Saint Panteleimon embodied these gifts by serving the suffering and confessing Christ without fear.

On July 17, the Orthodox Church commemorates the Holy Great Martyr Marina.

The readings appointed for the day are 1 Corinthians 7:35–8:7 and Matthew 15:29–31. Saint Paul directs our hearts toward undivided service to the Lord and teaches that love must guide all knowledge. In the Gospel, Christ receives the afflicted with mercy, heals them, and moves the gathered people to glorify God.

The witness of Great Martyr Marina teaches that faithfulness is not merely spoken but lived through perseverance, purity of heart, and trust in Christ. Her commemoration strengthens us to carry the Cross with hope and to seek the Lord in every circumstance.

On July 16, the Orthodox Church commemorates the Holy Hieromartyr Athenogenes and his ten disciples. St. Athenogenes was a faithful bishop and martyr who courageously confessed Christ during a time of persecution. Together with his ten disciples, he remained steadfast in the Christian Faith and entered the heavenly Kingdom through martyrdom. Their witness reminds us that true courage is rooted in love for Christ, strengthened through prayer, and sustained by the fellowship of the Church.

On July 13, the Orthodox Church celebrates the Synaxis of the Archangel Gabriel, honoring the holy messenger of God whose ministry is closely connected with the mystery of our salvation and the proclamation of the Incarnation of our Lord Jesus Christ.

The appointed readings for today are 1 Corinthians 5:9–6:11 and Matthew 13:54–58. St. Paul calls the faithful to repentance and holiness, reminding us that in Christ we have been washed, sanctified, and justified. In the Gospel, the unbelief encountered by our Lord in His own country warns us against allowing familiarity or hardness of heart to prevent us from recognizing the presence and work of God.

The faithful obedience of the Archangel Gabriel offers a powerful example of complete devotion to God's will. As we honor him, may we seek to receive the word of God with faith, humility, and readiness to serve.
