On September 9, the Orthodox Church honors the Holy and Righteous Ancestors of God, Joachim and Anna, the parents of the Most Holy Birthgiver-of-God and Ever-Virgin Mary. Their faith, patience, and steadfastness in prayer prepared them for the miraculous birth of the one who would give birth to Christ Himself. Their story reminds us that God’s providence unfolds in ways beyond human expectation, and that faithfulness and trust in Him are never in vain.

As we remember Joachim and Anna, we also reflect on the beauty of family life rooted in faith, prayer, and trust in God. Their example encourages all Christian families to cultivate holiness within the home, preparing a fertile ground for the seeds of faith to grow.

The Church also remembers Our Venerable Father Simeon the Stylite and his mother, Martha, who both demonstrated profound faith and dedication to God. St. Simeon, known for his extraordinary asceticism, spent decades atop a pillar in prayer and intercession for the world, teaching us the power of persistence and humility.

• 1 Timothy 2:1–7 – A call to intercessory prayer for all people, that we may live peaceful and godly lives.

Who Was Our Venerable Father Moses the Ethiopian?

Saint Moses the Ethiopian was a 4th-century ascetic renowned for his life of repentance, prayer, and humility. Born in Ethiopia, he fled a life of slavery and violence to embrace the monastic life in the deserts of Egypt. Through years of rigorous asceticism and steadfast devotion, he became a spiritual guide to many and a living testimony to the transformative power of God’s grace.

His life encourages us to cultivate inner peace, pursue holiness, and place our trust fully in God. Moses reminds us that spiritual strength and wisdom are born of prayer, humility, and unwavering faith, even amid challenges.

On August 22, the Orthodox Church commemorates the Holy Martyr Agathonicos, a faithful Christian who endured persecution and ultimately gave his life for his unshakable faith in Christ. The life of Agathonicos reminds us of the strength and courage that comes from a deep and abiding commitment to God, even in the face of adversity.

Who Was Saint Agathonicos?

Saint Agathonicos was a Christian martyr who lived during the early centuries of the Church, a time of great persecution for believers. He was known for his steadfast faith and his courage to proclaim the Gospel of Christ, despite the threat of death. Agathonicos’ commitment to Christ led to his eventual martyrdom, and he is honored by the Church as a powerful example of faithfulness, strength, and love for Christ. His feast day serves as a reminder of the call to stand firm in our own faith, regardless of the challenges we face in the world.

The Readings for Today:

• 2 Corinthians 4:13-18: In this passage, St. Paul speaks about the trials and tribulations Christians face but emphasizes that these challenges are temporary and that the eternal glory to come far outweighs the present suffering. He encourages believers to keep their focus on the unseen things that are eternal, rather than on the temporary things that are visible.

• Matthew 24:27-33, 42-51: In these verses, Jesus teaches His disciples about His second coming, urging them to be watchful and prepared for the day when He will return. He speaks about the importance of staying faithful and vigilant as we await His arrival.

Lessons from the Holy Martyr Agathonicos:

The example of Saint Agathonicos teaches us about the importance of standing firm in our faith, even in difficult times. On August 18, the Orthodox Church commemorates the Holy Martyrs Floros and Lauros, two brave martyrs whose faith and courage in the face of persecution serve as powerful examples of commitment to Christ.

Who Were Saints Floros and Lauros?

Saints Floros and Lauros were Christian martyrs who lived during the reign of the Roman Emperor Diocletian in the early 4th century. They were stonemasons by trade and were arrested for their refusal to renounce their Christian faith. Despite facing severe torture, they remained steadfast in their commitment to Christ and were ultimately martyred for their faith. Their story is a testament to the power of faith and the strength of the Christian witness, even in the face of death.

The Readings for Today:

• 2 Corinthians 2:4-15: In this passage, St. Paul expresses his sorrow over the Corinthians’ sin and his joy in their repentance. He speaks about the comfort and hope Christians find in Christ, even in the midst of suffering and difficulty.

• Matthew 23:13-22: In these verses, Jesus denounces the hypocrisy of the Pharisees and teachers of the law, warning them about the dangers of pride and self-righteousness. He calls us to humility, sincerity, and true service to God.
