Who Was Saint Agathonicos?

He was known for his steadfast faith and his courage to proclaim the Gospel of Christ, despite the threat of death. Agathonicos’ commitment to Christ led to his eventual martyrdom, and he is honored by the Church as a powerful example of faithfulness, strength, and love for Christ. His feast day serves as a reminder of the call to stand firm in our own faith, regardless of the challenges we face in the world.

The Readings for Today:

• 2 Corinthians 4:13-18: In this passage, St. Paul speaks about the trials and tribulations Christians face but emphasizes that these challenges are temporary and that the eternal glory to come far outweighs the present suffering. Who Were Saints Floros and Lauros?

Saints Floros and Lauros were Christian martyrs who lived during the reign of the Roman Emperor Diocletian in the early 4th century. They were stonemasons by trade and were arrested for their refusal to renounce their Christian faith. Despite facing severe torture, they remained steadfast in their commitment to Christ and were ultimately martyred for their faith. Their story is a testament to the power of faith and the strength of the Christian witness, even in the face of death.

The Readings for Today:

• 2 Corinthians 2:4-15: In this passage, St. Paul expresses his sorrow over the Corinthians’ sin and his joy in their repentance. He speaks about the comfort and hope Christians find in Christ, even in the midst of suffering and difficulty.

On August 14, the Orthodox Church celebrates the Pre-Feast of the Dormition of the Birthgiver-of-God and commemorates the Holy Prophet Micah.

The Pre-Feast of the Dormition of the Birthgiver-of-God:

The Dormition of the Theotokos is one of the major feasts in the Orthodox Church. The Pre-Feast period is a time of reflection and preparation as we anticipate the feast of Mary’s glorious repose. The Virgin Mary, as the mother of our Savior, holds a central place in our faith, and this feast highlights both her unique role in salvation history and her example of humility and grace.

The Holy Prophet Micah:

On this day, we also remember the Holy Prophet Micah. Micah’s prophecies, delivered in the 8th century BC, were focused on justice, righteousness, and the coming of the Messiah. He is best known for the verse: "What does the Lord require of you but to do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with your God?" (Micah 6:8). His call for true repentance and faithfulness to God continues to resonate with us today.

The Readings for Today:

• 2 Corinthians 1:1-7, 12-20: In this passage, St. Paul speaks of the comfort and hope that God provides, especially in times of suffering. He encourages the Corinthians to rely on God's promises and trust in His ability to deliver them from affliction.

Who Was Saint Euplus?

Despite being offered freedom if he renounced his faith, Saint Euplus chose to remain steadfast and was martyred for his belief in Christ. His example of unwavering commitment to the Gospel continues to encourage believers to remain strong, even in the face of hardship.
