Glory to Jesus Christ!
On October 13, the Orthodox Church commemorates the Holy Martyrs Carpus, Papylus, Agathodorus, and Agathonica, early Christians who gave their lives for the sake of the Gospel. Their steadfast faith and courage in the face of persecution serve as a powerful reminder that true devotion to Christ requires both love and endurance.
Ss. Carpus and Papylus were faithful leaders of the Church who endured torture and death rather than renounce their faith. With them suffered Agathodorus, their servant, and Agathonica, a noblewoman who chose martyrdom over denial of her Lord. Their united witness testifies to the unbreakable strength of faith rooted in love.
Today’s Scripture Readings
The prescribed readings for today offer us encouragement and reflection:
Philippians 1:1–7 – St. Paul expresses gratitude for the faith and partnership of the believers, reminding us that God, who began a good work in us, will bring it to completion.
Luke 7:36–50 – The story of the sinful woman who anointed Christ’s feet teaches us the power of repentance and the immeasurable mercy of God’s forgiveness.
