""Live without cares, judge no-one, vex no-one, and honor everyone." --St. Ambrose of Optina

"Whatever a man loves he inevitably clings to, and in order not to lose it he rejects everything that keeps him from it. So he who loves God cultivates pure prayer, driving out every passion that keeps him from it." --St. Maximos the Confessor

"One should note that God foreknows all things but that He does not predestine them all. Thus He foreknows the things that depend on us, but He does not predestine them - because neither does He will evil to be done nor does He force virtue. And so, predestination is the result of the divine command made with foreknowledge. Those things which do not depend upon us, however, He predestines in accordance with His foreknowledge. For, through His foreknowledge, He has already decided all things beforehand in accordance with His goodness and justice." --St. John of Damascus

"If you cannot be merciful, at least speak as though you are a sinner. If you are not a peacemaker, at least do not be a troublemaker. If you cannot be assiduous, at least in your thought be like a sluggard. If you are not victorious, do not exalt yourself over the vanquished. If you cannot close the mouth of a man who disparages his companion, at least refrain from joining him in this." --St. Isaac the Syrian

"Where there is simplicity, there are a hundred Angels, but where there is cleverness--there are none." --St. Ambrose of Optina

"Faith bears fear of perdition; fear of perdition bears abstinence from passion; this abstinence bears patience in tribulation; patience bears hope in God; hope in God bears indifference to worldly matters; this disregard for worldly things bears love for God, which is the highest of all the virtues." --St. Nicodemos of Mt Athos

"If the Holy Spirit is peace of soul, as He is said to be, and as He is in reality, and if anger is disturbance of heart, as it actually is and as it is said to be, then nothing so prevents His presence in us as anger." --St. John Climacus

"We only call the Lord, God, but in reality we have our own gods, because we do not do the Will of God, but the will and thoughts of our flesh, the will of our heart, of our passions ; our gods are—our flesh, pleasures, money, dress, etc." --St. John of Kronstadt

"The conscience is a true teacher, and whoever listens to it will not stumble." --St. Thalassios the Libyan

"Do not trust in your own righteousness, do not worry about the past, but control your tongue and your stomach." --St. Anthony the Great (of Egypt)

"Hence it is very clear that disturbing urges are not always aroused in us by other people's faults. Rather, we are to blame -- we who have stored up within ourselves the causes of our offenses and the seeds of our vices that, when the rain shower of temptation drenches our mind, at once break forth into buds and fruits." --St. John Cassian

"Even if you are not what you should be, you should not despair. It is bad enough that you have sinned- why in addition do you wrong God by regarding Him in your ignorance as powerless? Is He, who for your sake created the great universe that you behold, incapable of saving your soul?" --St. Peter Damaskos

"If love is the fulfilling of the law (Romans 13:10), he who is full of rancor towards his neighbor and lays traps for him and curses him, exulting in his fall, must surely be a transgressor deserving eternal punishment." --St. Maximos the Confessor
